At Fort Island you inhale the fresh island breeze and sit, relax and look out at the Mighty Essequibo River.

 

Fort Island Resort is accessible by travelling by vehicle from Georgetown, (around 2 hours), followed by a short 40 minute motorboat journey.

 

Fort Island is located some 15 kilometers from the Mouth of the Essequibo River was once the Capital of the Colonies of Essequibo and Demerara during the 16th and 17th Century. Fort Island bears an imprint of the Dutch occupation in the form of two important structures: Fort Zeelandia, built in 1744 and the Court of Policy hall built eight years later as well as The Court of Policy Hall is the oldest non-Military structure in Guyana and over the years it has served as a Church, Court House, and Venture Office and is now a Dutch Heritage Museum.

 

Nearby is Fort Zeelandia, a structure built in 1744 as a defensive fortification and is among the oldest structure in Guyana. This site, along with the Court of Policy building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been designated a National Monument by the National Trust of Guyana!

We have an open Gazebo and Benab Style Bar and Restaurant. All units are a short walk away from the river and our bar area. It is ideal for a cool refreshing drink, overlooking the Mighty Essequibo River and the lush green scenery. Just imagine sipping sundowner with a gorgeous sunset right on your doorstep!

All our dishes reflect the Cuisine of Guyana’s various cultures and all are freshly prepared to order. We follow Guyana’s record of having delicious, freshly prepared food, using an abundance of fresh ingredients.
