At Fort Island, you inhale the fresh island breeze and sit, relax and look out at the Mighty Essequibo River.

Fort Island Resort is accessible by traveling by vehicle from Georgetown, (around 2 hours), followed by a short 40-minute motorboat journey.

Fort Island is located some 15 kilometers from the Mouth of the Essequibo River and was once the Capital of the Colonies of Essequibo and Demerara during the 16th and 17th Centuries. Fort Island bears an imprint of the Dutch occupation in the form of two important structures: Fort Zeelandia, built in 1744 and the Court of Policy hall built eight years later as well as The Court of Policy Hall is the oldest non-Military structure in Guyana and over the years it has served as a Church, Court House, and Venture Office and is now a Dutch Heritage Museum.
